Many of us are aware of the health benefits of enjoying a good sex life but new research has shown it can positively impact upon your job satisfaction and productivity too.

Research at Oregon State University’s College of Business (2017) found that maintaining a healthy sex life at home boosts employees’ job satisfaction and engagement at work.

Associate Professor Keith Leavitt and colleagues studied the work and sex habits of 159 married employees over the course of 2 weeks and found those who prioritized sex at home gave themselves a next day advantage in the workplace, where they were more engaged in what they were doing and enjoyed it more too.

Even more interesting, all the employees were completely unaware of this effect. Leavitt, an expert in organisational behaviour and management says

“Maintaining a healthy relationship that includes a healthy sex life will help employees stay happy and engaged in their work, benefiting both the employees and the organisation they work for”.

The positive effect was found to linger for at least 24 hours and was equally strong in both sexes even when factors such as marital satisfaction and sleep quality were taken into consideration.

Boosts confidence and mood

Having good sex boosts our mood by releasing dopamine, that creates that feel good factor and oxytocin, associated with bonding and social attachment. It can boost our self esteem, making us feel more confident.

Less Time Off Sick

People who enjoy a good sex life often have better immunity and are less likely to take time off sick from work.

Having sex once or twice a week has been linked with higher levels of an antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA, which can protect you from getting colds and other infections (Wilkes University)

Stress relief

Stress is well known for impacting upon sexual function so bringing work related stress home can negatively impact upon sex lives. With the prevalence of constantly being in contact through smart phones and email, the findings of this research highlighted the importance of leaving work in the workplace. When work affects an employee’s personal life, they often neglect their sex life or their sexual function may be affected, leading to decreased sexual satisfaction, which in turn, may cause their engagement at work to decline.

Having a regular sex life can reduce stress levels

Anyone for a sex break?

Maturbation breaks have also been a topic of interest recently with many people confessing to nipping off to enjoy some self pleasure to boost their mood and concentration or just to alleviate boredom.

An unusual suggestion was recently proposed by a town councilman in Sweden to allow municipal workers to use an hour of their work week for sex in the hope of boosting the town’s declining population and to improve employee moods and productivity.

Although this suggestion is unlikely to be adopted any time soon, employers can boost their employees productivity and engagement at work by ensuring they enjoy a good work-life balance, encouraging them to disconnect from the workplace and concentrate on home life, hopefully leading to more satisfying sex lives too.
