Lubricants are not just for women

Lubricants are not just for women | Jo Divine

Mention the word ‘lubricant’ in a sexual manner and most people think of older women experiencing vaginal dryness as a result of the menopause, but sexual lubricants can benefit both men and women, whatever their age.

Using lubricants are a quick fix for vaginal dryness but can offer so much more in the way of sexual pleasure. The benefits of using lubricants during sex are numerous and can improve sexual health for both men and women.

Jozkowski et al (2013) conducted a study of 2,451 women aged between 18-68 and found that overall, women felt positive about lubricants, preferring sex to feel more wet than not. The women reported that sex felt more comfortable and pleasurable using lubrication than without it.

Most men want their partner to experience pleasureable sex and very few enjoy sex if their partner is in pain, therefore using lubricant can help enhance sex play. Sex should never be painful, yet so many women do not tell their partner that it doesn’t feel pleasureable. Being honest will make your sex life so much better.

How can using lubrication enhance your sex life?

Many men rush into the act of sex before women are ready. Many women do not feel they are lubricated enough for a variety of reasons, such as hormonal changes, stress, medication and just not being turned on.

Using lubrication whilst receiving manual masturbation not only feels good for the man but also allows their partner to become sexually aroused too. Having a well-lubricated penis or vagina not only enhances sexual pleasure but also prevents damage or abrasion to the delicate tissues of the vagina and penis. It can also help make sexual intercourse last longer if it feels good.

Some lubricated condoms can have a drying effect which can cause abrasions to the walls of the vagina, making the women feel sore and sex painful or uncomfortable so choose condoms with silicone lubricants such as “Skins”: which prevent this from happening. You could try using a drop of lubricant on the head of the penis prior to putting on the condom. You do need to be aware that applying a condom to a lubricated penis can increase the risk of it slipping off during sexual intercourse.

Older men face different sexual challenges in the form of erection and arousal problems. They often no longer become aroused at the sight of a scantily clad woman. Requiring longer genital arousal to gain erections and to be turned on, the use of lubrication can intensify the feeling of sexual pleasure, helping to make erections last longer.

By using lubricants during foreplay or when you are unable to have penetrative sex, you can improve your sexual pleasure and heighten sexual arousal. Using sex toys with lubricant can make sex play more fun and last longer. We always recommend using an anal lubricant which is thicker, pH balanced to the pH of the anus and longer lasting with anal toys.

What lubricant to choose?

Many couples use saliva as their lubricant, but it is more watery than slippery and dries out quickly. Some lubricants can cause allergic reactions or irritation due to the nature of the substances they contain. Here at Jo Divine, we recommend YES organic lubricants as they are completely plant based and do not contain any unpleasant substances which may be harmful to health.

Water based lubricants

These are the most popular choice of lubricant, being inexpensive, non-staining and many can be ingested in small amounts during sex. They are also safe to use with latex condoms and diaphragms. Many women like YES water based lubricant because it feel more like their natural vaginal lubrication. YES is also absorbed into the tissues of the vagina, helping to nourish and keep them flexible.

Oil based lubricants

Being thicker and more creamy in nature, oil based lubricants last longer during sex. They are great to use for manual masturbation, but be aware that they are not safe to use with latex contraceptives. Using YES oil based lubricant on the penis can feel creamy, providing nourishment to the delicate skin of the penis and enabling sex to last longer. Using both oil based and water based lubricant during sexual intercourse can increase sexual pleasure.

Silicone based lubricants

Silicone lubricants, contain tiny particles of silicone which make them feel silky to touch. They are safe to use with latex products, but must not be used in conjunction with silicone sex toys as they can damage the silicone coating on these products.

Petroleum based products

Products such as Vaseline and baby oil are best avoided as they are difficult to wash off and may cause irritation by changing the pH of the vagina, which can lead to yeast infections. They also destroy condoms and latex products.

YES organic lubricants come in tubes and applicators, making it easier to apply the lubricant exactly where you want it to go. It is advisable to squirt a little in your hand to warm it up first rather than applying it directly onto the genitals – there’s nothing less arousing than cold lube! Many oil based lubricants are best when warmed in your hand, as the heat will melt it and make it easier to apply.

Whatever your age or gender, using a lubricant is the quickest and easiest way to enhance sex. So why not try lubricated sex play and start to enjoy increased sexual pleasure today.
